Founded in 1880 by William Alfred Paine and Wallace G Webber, this brokerage firm had a colourful history. The company made it through a securities fraud scandal in the late 1930s, and seemingly came back even more powerful in the 1980s with 161 branches in 42 states and six offices in Asia and Europe. By late 2000, PaineWebber was the fourth largest private client firm in the US with 8,554 stockbrokers employed in 385 offices.
